We are an adventurous bunch of like-minded people, that enjoy exploring foreign countries in 4x4 overland trucks.

Our goal is to make overland travel more accessible, safe and affordable: made possible by vehicle co-ownership.

Simply explained co-ownership is: 1 vehicle (a purpose build full kitted out 4x4 truck) gets owned by 5 - 10 co-owners. You own a share of a vehicle in one location, but you can access all trucks, in all locations around the world. (soon!)

Why should I co-own a vehicle?

Co- owners benefit from overland trucks in different locations around the world. Own a share of a vehicle in one location and access trucks in all locationsOverland or expedition trucks that are owned by sole owners are only used 10% of the time, especially if the owner lives overseas. That is a lot of capital not being utilized. New vehicles lose 20-30% of their value in the first 1-3 years.
Why would you accept that? But you want the new vehicle for reliability and safety reasons, when you are
traveling remote areas especially, a reliable vehicle is paramount for your safety. Our vehicles are a maximum of three years old, have low kilometers and are inspected before and after every trip. We also equip our vehicles with winch, recovery gear and (emergency) communication devices (unlike most hire companies) to ensure a safe journey. For short trips (1-2 weeks) hiring a vehicle might be the more cost effective way, for longer trips however, co-ownership becomes more cost effective than hiring a (like for like) 4x4 camper. (see case study below) All vehicle management, storage, maintenance, repairs, paperwork, vehicle preparation is run by our hassle free vehicle management scheme. Co-ownership:
How does it all work?

The goal is to get more people travelling by 4x4 overland truck in foreign locations and be more cost effective than a rental or sole ownership. (see case study below)

Imagine you could just hop on a plane to Africa, Australia or any other location and a 4x4 truck (you own a share of) is waiting for you to go exploring? How cool right?!

Imagine some friendly, smiling local is coming to pick you up from the airport, show you around the vehicle, share some last pieces of local knowledge with you and send you off on your expedition...

Lets make it happen!

The idea of "Overland truck sharing" is were you own shares of a vehicle. (This is common practice for example in the flying community owning expensive planes or there is a company in Switzerland doing it with supercars.)

You experience ownership but without all of the risks and costs of sole ownership, as the running costs of the vehicle are shared costs. Additionally, depreciation is kept to a minimum by sharing it.

It works like this:

Simply explained, 1 vehicle (a purpose build full kitted out truck) gets owned by 5 - 10 co-owners. Each co-owner buys a share for the purchase of the desired vehicle. With each share purchased, the co-owner receives a certain number of weeks of use of the vehicle. The other costs such as insurance (vehicle and liability), maintenance, road taxes, warranty, preparation and storage are shared among all shareholders. (read about hassle free vehicle management)

As a result, the co-owners pay a fraction of the purchase price and a fraction of the maintenance costs of the vehicle.

The purchase only goes ahead if we get enough funding. The reservation fee will be refunded, should the vehicle build not go ahead.

You can also own more than one share which increases your usage time and you can sell your shares via our platform at any time to get some money back. To secure your asset we have a co-ownership register that tracks all transactions.

With the purchase of at least one share of any vehicle, you can access all vehicles in all locations by swapping 'use time' of the vehicles. For example if you own a share of a vehicle in Australia with the usage time of 8 weeks. You can decide to use maybe 3 weeks of that 8 weeks in Africa for example.

Hassle free vehicle management

All vehicle management is organized by Overlandtrucksharing professionals to look after maintenance and operation of the vehicles. All vehicles get stored under cover in a secure facility near a major airport for easy access. Every co-owner gets an introduction with the vehicle, once they arrive on site. The Namibia vehicle, for example, is stored at a purpose build overland vehicle storage facility. The batterie gets trickle charged, while in storage. After every trip, the vehicle gets cleaned inside and out, inspected for potential damage and necessary servicing, after that prepared for the trip ahead. Leaving you to just hop in and enjoy!

The company

While Overlandtrucksharing.com is a new approach to international overland travel for the community. The organizational structure in the background is a company.

The company is based in Germany and is running the co-ownership scheme via this website, meaning transactions of shares, legalities, co-ownership contracts, vehicle bookings etc. We are also managing the vehicle builds in the process. The vehicles however are run by subsidiaries in the locations the vehicles are operating in. Every vehicle is comprehensively insured through the company and the company is protected with a liability insurance in every location.

Hi, I'm Gunnar, I have had a love for travelling all my life, mainly road trips. It started with motorhomes across Europe with my parents and later by myself.

With moving to New Zealand, my interest for 4x4's began... this is over 10 years ago now. Since than we have done many 4x4 trips, from weekend excursions to multiple month expeditions, with the recent highlight of 25000km through Australia with my family.

Having returned to my old home Germany for only a few month now, the travel buck lets me thinking about future endeavors already ...

Why should I co-own a vehicle?
Overland or expedition trucks that are owned by sole owners are only used 10% of the time, especially if the owner lives overseas. That is a lot of capital not being utilized. New vehicles lose 20-30% of their value in the first 1-3 years. Why would you accept that? But you want the new vehicle for reliability and safety reasons, when you are traveling remote areas especially.
For short trips (1-2 weeks) hiring a vehicle might be the more cost effective way, for longer trips however, co-ownership becomes more cost effective than hiring a (like for like) 4x4 camper. With buying into one vehicle you get access to all Overlandtrucksharing vehicles around the world

Why should I not simply hire a vehicle for my travels?
For short trips (1-2 weeks) hiring a vehicle might be the cost effective way, for longer trips however, co-ownership becomes more cost effective than hiring a (like for like) 4x4 camper. Hire companies might have limitations on where you can and where you can not go and how many kilometers you travel.

How do I book my travel time with the vehicle?
Once the vehicle build goes ahead there will be a calendar in the members section of this website to book the dates with your vehicle.

Can I sell my vehicle shares?
Yes, you can sell your shares via our platform at any time. Your share gets advertised on our platform for other members to buy. Fees for the buyer apply. To secure your asset we have a co-ownership register that tracks all transactions.

Can I travel with all vehicles in the fleet?
Yes, you can. This happens in the members only section of this website. Fees apply. The majority of use time has to be used on the vehicle you own shares of.

Can I buy more than one share per vehicle?
Yes you can. You can either buy multiple shares  of one vehicle, which increases your usage time, (maximum of 4 shares per vehicle per person) or alternatively buy shares of another vehicle.

What happens when the vehicle retires or gets sold?
Once the vehicle has reached a certain age (usually 2-3 years) or gets to a certain number of kilometers, the vehicle just gets too unreliable for our standards and therefore too costly to run. We will then decide to sell the vehicle (only with permission of all co-owners) to get the most possible amount of money back, which gets paid back to the co-owners or transferred onto another vehicle in the fleet.

Is there a monthly cost somewhere?
No, there is no monthly cost, as this is not a subscription.
You own the vehicles shares you have purchased until you decide to sell them.

Are there any other cost but the share price?
The share price is buying a part of the vehicle. The running costs of the vehicle, like insurance, taxes, maintenance and servicing are on top of the share price and will be split equally between all co-owners. As we strictly don't like hidden cost, this process will be straight forward and transparent.

Do I pay for the share right away?
We just take 10% of the total share price as reservation fee which is due with signing the co-ownership agreement.  The reservation fee will be refunded, should the vehicle build not go ahead. The remaining amount only becomes due as soon as all 10 shares are sold via our platform.

Are there any requirements for prospect co-owners?
Yes there are. The minimum driver age of 28 years with current full driver license is required for all our vehicles. We recommend previous offroad driving experience, if you are planning on travelling to remote places. Offroad driving and vehicle recovery can be dangerous, training is recommended. Also to protect our community and assets, we ask all co-owners to provide a police certificate on application.

Should I wait with the reservation of a share until more co-owners participate in the vehicle?
This is not advised, as more co-owners could think the same and therefore delay the funding of the vehicle.

What happens if not all 10 shares per vehicle get sold?

In that a case, we can extend the financing for an additional time period. If it is not fully financed after that, we will remove the vehicle, due to a lack of demand and paid reservation fees will be refunded or transferred to another vehicle of your choice.

Who pays for repairs? Is there warranty?

All vehicles are bought brand new and kitted out with after market equipment to suit our needs for overlanding and camping. The new vehicles come with a manufacturers warranty, that covers repairs of vehicle and engine fails. All costs for regular vehicle servicing and maintenance beyond warranty and any out-off- warranty repairs are shared by the co-owners. Some vehicle manufacturers offer vehicle service plans, meaning some servicing is prepaid with the share price.

Excessive wear and tear caused by reckless/ careless or false driving techniques, missed regular checks (or scheduled servicing) of the vehicle while on a trip will need to be covered by the co-owner that caused it.
